At only 16 years old, Laurie Hernandez may be the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics team this year, but once you see her in action, it's easy to see why she made the cut.
Laurie absolutely dominates in all four gymnastics events and finished second only to superstar Simone Biles in the U.S. trials. (She landed the highest score in the beam category also.) Rio may be her first time competing in the Olympics, but she's quickly earned a reputation as someone to look out for — so don't be surprised if she ends up winning a few medals before the month is over. Here are just a few fun facts you should know about this up-and-comer:1. She's been doing gymnastics since she was 5 years old — by choice! Her parents originally signed her up for dance and ballet classes, but Laurie wasn't at all interested in either of them. Gymnastics, on the other hand, instantly caught her attention. "My earliest memory was watching gymnastics on live TV, and wanting to do what the 'big girls' did," she told NBC.
