Cubs fans might be upset or even furious after witnessing a late
comeback wasted in a 5-4 loss to the rival White Sox. But Cubs manager
Joe Maddon stood by his players and even took exception as to why he
pulled slugger Anthony Rizzo for pinch-runner Matt Szczur in the top of
the ninth inning. “To score the run, hopefully the winning run,” Maddon
replied after Rizzo was pulled after moving to second on a single by
Willson Contreras. Szczur was left stranded as Jason Heyward struck out,
and the Cubs went on to win on a single by Tyler Saladino off
left-hander Mike Montgomery. “If the ball is hit to the outfielder, and
Rizzo cannot score, that’s when you pretty much get upset with
yourself,” Rizzo.
